Context: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Uzbekistan and participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Heads of State meeting in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

  • The outreach reflects India’s effort to strengthen engagement with Central Asia, a region of growing strategic importance amid changing Russian, Chinese, Western, Turkish and Iranian influence.

Central Asia: Strategic and Political Context

  • Central Asia comprises Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan and is landlocked between the major powers Russia and China.
