  • Context: The commissioning of the final sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC) has completed India’s 2,843-km operational DFC network, comprising the WDFC and Eastern DFC (EDFC).
    • WDFC:JNPT (Maharashtra)–Dadri (Uttar Pradesh), 1,506 km; mainly carries containerised and port-linked freight.
  • EDFC:Ludhiana (Punjab)–Sonnagar (Bihar), 1,337 km; mainly caters to coal and mineral traffic.
  • EDFC: Fully commissioned in October 2023.
  • DFC purpose: Dedicated high-capacity tracks for freight → reduces congestion with passenger trains, transit time and logistics costs.
  • Major benefit: Enables faster freight movement and facilitates modal shift from road to rail.
  • Current freight speed: Generally >50 kmph on DFCs, compared with much lower speeds on conventional mixed-traffic routes.
  • DFCCIL:Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited; Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) responsible for construction, operation and maintenance of DFCs.
  • Financing: Major external financing from World Bank and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), besides budgetary support.
  • National Rail Plan: Targets raising rail’s freight share from about 27% to 45% by 2030.
  • Proposed 3rd DFC: Dankuni (West Bengal)–Surat (Gujarat), intended to strengthen east–west freight movement; DPR under preparation.
  • DFC origin: Concept emerged from India–Japan discussions in 2005; feasibility study was prepared in 2007.
  • Important distinction: WDFC is primarily port/container-oriented, while EDFC is predominantly coal/mineral-oriented.

Prelims Question

Q1. With reference to Dedicated Freight Corridors (DFCs) in India, consider the following statements:

  1. The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is primarily oriented towards containerised and port-linked freight, whereas the Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor has a greater emphasis on coal and mineral traffic.
  2. Dedicated Freight Corridors can facilitate a shift of freight traffic from road to rail by providing faster and more reliable rail freight movement.
  3. The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor connects Ludhiana with Dadri, while the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor connects JNPT with Sonnagar.
  4. The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited is responsible for the construction, operation and maintenance of the DFCs.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

A. Only two
B. Only three
C. All four
D. Only one

Answer: B

Explanation:

  • 1 is correct: WDFC is mainly container/port-oriented, while EDFC predominantly serves coal and mineral traffic.
  • 2 is correct: Dedicated high-capacity freight tracks improve speed and reliability, making modal shift from road to rail more feasible.
  • 3 is incorrect: EDFC runs from Ludhiana to Sonnagar, while WDFC runs from JNPT to Dadri.
  • 4 is correct: DFCCIL is the SPV responsible for constructing, operating and maintaining DFCs.
