Context: Advances in Artificial Intelligence (AI) have raised a fundamental question: can a machine that demonstrates sophisticated intelligence also develop consciousness or subjective experience?
Does AI Have an Internal Thought Process?
- Researchers studying Anthropic’s Claude Sonnet 4.5 have identified internal neural patterns in the model that can produce words or concepts related to its eventual output, although these processes remain invisible to users.
- Anthropic describes this as a “small collection of internal neural patterns”, termed the “J-space”.
- Researchers have compared this concept with the global workspace of the human brain, where information from different neural systems is integrated and made available for conscious processing.
Intelligence vs Consciousness
- Advanced AI behaviour does not necessarily demonstrate consciousness because intelligence and consciousness are distinct concepts.
- Intelligence broadly concerns the ability to process information, learn, reason and solve problems, whereas consciousness involves subjective or first-person experience.
- Neuroscientist Anil K. Seth has cautioned against inferring consciousness merely from increasingly sophisticated intelligent behaviour.
- Nearly five decades of consciousness research has produced 300+ theories and frameworks, indicating that there is still no universally accepted explanation of consciousness.
Global Workspace Theory

Why Conscious AI Would Change the Ethical Debate

- Establishing reliable methods to determine whether an AI possesses subjective experience may become a prerequisite for developing appropriate AI safety and governance frameworks.
