Context: On 27 August 2026, the Centre notified the Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2026, making Indian Standard Time (IST) the single reference time for legal, administrative, commercial and other official purposes across India.

  • The Rules will come into force 180 days after publication in the Official Gazette, giving government departments, businesses and institutions time to modify their systems.

Why a Common Time Reference?

  • Increasing dependence on digital and technology-based systems makes accurate and synchronised time-stamping essential.

Evolution of the ‘One Nation, One Time’ Initiative

  • On 27 January 2025, the Department of Consumer Affairs notified the Draft Legal Metrology (Indian Standard Time) Rules, 2025, proposing nationwide time synchronisation.
  • The Department collaborated with the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to disseminate IST from five legal metrology laboratories with millisecond-to-microsecond accuracy.
  • The government also constituted a high-powered inter-ministerial committee to develop the policy, regulatory and legislative framework for IST adoption under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.

What is Indian Standard Time?

  • The IST® trademark was registered in 2024, but IST had not previously been legally mandated as the national time reference.
  • IST is generated using advanced atomic clocks and satellite links and is traceable to UTC with an uncertainty of less than 3 nanoseconds.
